Microsoft's Office 2016 for Mac is set to reach its end of support date on October 13, 2020, and after that date, connecting to Office 365 services using the Office 2016 for Mac software will no. I suspect Microsoft will support it until 14 October 2025, which is the end of support date for Office 2016, and that Office 2022 (yes, there will be one) will only get five years.

To install Office 2016, on each Mac I went to portal.office.com and signed into the user's Office 365 account using their credentials. I then downloaded the Office 2016 installer by clicking the Install Office button on the Office365 homepage.

What is the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy for Microsoft 365 and Office products?
The Office 365 and Microsoft 365 suite of services, along with Microsoft 365 Apps, is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy.
On April 21, 2020, we adopted 'Microsoft 365 Apps' for our two Office client subscription products:
- Office 365 ProPlus will become Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise
- Office 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Apps for business
Also, on that date, we changed the names of our Office 365 small and medium business offerings and many of our consumer offerings:
- Office 365 Business Essentials will become Microsoft 365 Business Basic
- Office 365 Business Premium will become Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business will become Microsoft 365 Business Premium
- Office 365 Home will become Microsoft 365 Family
- Office 365 Personal will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Solo will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Services will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 University will become Microsoft 365 Personal
- Office 365 Home (for military) will become Microsoft 365 Family
There are no naming changes for Office 365 Enterprise, Government, and Education editions and Microsoft 365 Enterprise, Government, and Education editions.

Office 2016 For Mac End Of Support
Microsoft today announced the end of support for Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac. From today, Microsoft will not be releasing bug fixes, or security updates for these products. Also, Microsoft won’t offer technical support for these products. If you haven’t already started the Office 2010 migration process, you need to start now. Also, to use services like Exchange Online and SharePoint Online, you need Microsoft 365 Apps, Office 2019, or Office 2016.
“While we will not take any active measures to block legacy versions of the Office client from connecting, these older clients will fall out of step with the service enhancements and may present performance and/or reliability issues over time,” said Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365.
Following two options are available for people who want to upgrade from Office 2010.
- Microsoft 365 Apps, the subscription version of Office that comes with many Office 365 (and Microsoft 365) enterprise and business plans.
- Office 2019, which is sold as a one-time purchase and available for one computer per license.
